Description

The Mathews Ave. Landfill Site is a 70-acre site, divided into 2 parcels of land, parcel A and parcel B.

Parcel A (outlined in red below) is a 37 -acre parcel of land (formerly a construction and demoliton landfill) located in the Village of Solvay, New York. The parcel includes a drainage swale and a landlocked segment of the old Erie Canal along the northern portion of the site, and is bordered by Belle Isle/Gerelock Rd. to the north and east, by an undeveloped parcel to the west, and by Geddes Brook at the NW parcel boundary.

Parcel B (outlined in green)

The eastern portion of this 70-acre site is occupied by the former Mathews Ave. Landfill, a 20-acre parcel utilized by the Solvay Process Co. and Allied Chemical (predecessors to Honeywell International) for the disposal of various process wastes and construction and demolition debris. The landfill operated from 1925 until the late 1980s. The remainder of the site includes a drainage swale and a portion of the former Erie Canal to the north, and regulated wetlands between the Mathews Ave. Landfill and Geddes Brook to the west.

Environmental Issues

A series of environmental investigations was begun in 1989, and concluded with a Preliminary Site Assessment (PSA) in 2002/2003 and a Supplemental PSA in 2006/2007. The results of the investigations revealed elevated levels of metals (including mercury), VOCs, SVOCs, and PCBs in various site media including the landfill material, soils, sediments, surface water, and groundwater. During the PSA, diaphragm cells (and possibly mercury cells) associated with Honeywell operations were observed in the Mathews Ave.

What’s being done to address the problem?

A Preliminary Site Assessment (PSA) was conducted for Mathews Ave. Parcel A & Parcel B. This PSA was a condition of an order of consent with Honeywell for the properties. Following the acceptance of the PSA the parcels transition into the Brownfield Cleanup Program. The Volunteer has submitted a RAWP for Parcel A which is currently under review.
